Tradition: knowing the history
I never realized how important color was to the early masters. With a limited palette of pigments, they could only do so much to get the colors that were desired for their pieces.
As more pigments and tools were made available to artists, they were similarly able to broaden their skill sets and repertoire with pieces of work that were more vibrant and evocative. Therefore making paintings more interesting to the eye and emotionally binding to the viewer's soul.
Greater pigment palettes allowed for artists to focus a little more on color and how they used it or the lack of it to evoke emotion.
